# What is Agent Tools?

*Artificial Intelligence · Last updated: September 27, 2026*

Helper software components that enable artificial intelligence to interact with the outside world or perform operations on the internet.

## Overview

Artificial intelligence models normally only generate text and cannot directly connect with the outside world. Agent tools are special functions that provide artificial intelligence with capabilities such as querying the weather, sending emails, reading files, or searching the internet. Thanks to these tools, artificial intelligence evolves from being just a conversational model into an active assistant that gets work done.

***Analogy:** These tools are like a hammer, screwdriver, and computer given to an expert genius whose hands are tied, so they can perform tasks in the outside world.*

## How it works

The artificial intelligence understands the user's request, decides which tool to use, and sends the appropriate command to that tool. The tool completes the task and returns the result to the artificial intelligence, and the artificial intelligence then presents the final response to you.

## Where it is used

Commonly found in advanced AI assistants, automation platforms, and code development tools.

## Commonly confused with

Should not be confused with the artificial intelligence's own mind or weights; these are externally added capability extensions.

## Questions and answers

**What tools can artificial intelligence use?**

It can use anything digital, such as APIs, search engines, calculators, and file managers.

**Are these tools safe?**

If proper restrictions and permissions are not provided, artificial intelligence can perform unintended actions, so security boundaries must be set.
